Jasper, a form of chalcedony and is an opaque impure variety of silica, usually red, yellow, brown or green in color. Blue is rare. Jasper has found widespread use in jewelry and for fashioning ornaments since its early use as beads. Jasper breaks with a smooth surface, and is used for ornamentation or as a gemstone. It can be highly polished. Black jasper was used for carvings in Roman times. Most "Indian beggar beads" consist at least in part of diversely colored jasper; many carvings are made of jasper. Jasper is indicated to comprise the first foundation of walls of the Heavenly City (Revelation, XXI: 19). Jasper is recorded in ancient manuscripts (e.g., Exodus XXVII: 20). On Minoan Crete within present day Greece jasper was carved to produce seals circa 1800 BC based upon archaeological recoveries at the palace of Knossos.
